Girón's Breakwater Defying Time and Weather.

In his book En marcha con Fidel, Antonio Núñez Jiménez describes Playa Girón's beauty like a shell open to the blue Caribbean Sea and he also refers to the coral reef that breaks the waves in a white sea  foam.

In those initial visits together with the Comandante Fidel, appeared the idea of construct a tourist village there and a breakwater made out of concrete to protect the artificial sandy grounds that would be transferred to that coast, where the beach would have a freshwater space within the salty one.

On July 27th, 1961, the Tourist Village Playa Girón was inaugurated, presided by Fidel.

The jetty, illuminated with streetlamps and with benches by its sides was suited the purposes of the community and the visitors. It allowed them to have a good very near the waves.

But time, the climate and men sometimes conjure their destructive forces to ravage the beautiful. On November 4, 2001 the hurricane Michelle crossed Ciénaga de Zapata with rage.

Nevertheless, the colossal work shows its majesty. Children and seagulls got together in the capture of fish and the old breakwater, now fractured, keeps on doing facing the sea and snatching its fury. / Arnaldo Mirabal - Girón.

 

 

El malecón de Playa Girón (+ Fotos)

En su libro En Marcha con Fidel, Antonio Núñez Jiménez describe la belleza de Playa Girón como una concha abierta al Caribe azul, y también hace alusión a la barrera coralina que rompe las olas en blanco espumaje.

En esas visitas iniciales que realizara junto al Comandante Fidel, surge la idea de construir allí una villa turística y un malecón de concreto que sirviera de rompeolas para proteger los arenales artificiales que serían trasladados a esa costa, donde la playa contaría con una poceta de agua dulce dentro de la salada.

El 27 de julio de 1961, se efectuó la inauguración de la Villa Turística Playa Girón, presidida por nuestro Comandante en Jefe.

El malecón iluminado con farolas y con bancos en sus laterales, servía para que la comunidad y los visitantes disfrutaran del más puro esparcimiento a pocos metros de la respiración de las olas.

Pero el tiempo, el clima y los hombres a veces conjuran sus fuerzas destructivas para arrasar lo bello. El 4 de noviembre de 2001 el huracán Michel atraviesa la Ciénaga de Zapata arremetiendo con furia.
A pesar de todo, la colosal obra luce su majestuosidad pasada. Los niños y las gaviotas se lían en la captura de peces, y el viejo malecón rompeolas, ya fracturado, continúa haciéndole frente al mar arrebatándole su furia. / Arnaldo Mirabal - Girón.
