Beach The Machine LEAVES II

FOR> Julio A. Amorín Ponce

  ...
But if for bad, the humans have changed the natural panorama of the mentioned beach, for luck, they have not been able to him neither they will be able to him to make with the history of the place, since the alone past can remember but live not again neither you can be returned behind to the time. Thanks to it Beach The Machine exhibits a very interesting human history, let us see:

- The aboriginal ones should make an intentional use of the natural means who provided them food and mainly, the shell of the big mollusks like the cobo, vital for the elaboration of their rudimentary and multiple work instruments. Relatively near the beach, to alone a kilometer to the north a place archaeological noted aborigine has been reported "Hill of the Jobal", what is indicative that the prehispanic man also delighted and he took advantage of the natural attributes of Beach The Machine.

- For the roomy of the bay and to possess bigger depth for their side this, where a great cebadal is appreciated (marine vegetation), it should be recurrent the visits of the corsairs and pirates, because several legends and stories conserved generacionalmente in the town cenaguero give faith of it.

- However, the written history gives bill that for Beach The Machine, formerly Pier of Santa Teresa's Cluster, they made act of presence the repugnant galleys that carried hundred of black chained slaves and barefoot that after crossing the marshy earth heading for the coastal north, they were sold as beasts to augment the endowments of the numerous geniuses that were located to the north of the Marsh of Zapata. Four secret landings of black slaves took place for Beach The Machine during the years 1853, 1854, 1859 and 1864.

- The relationship of Beach The Machine with the wars of independence developed in the XIX century is notorious, since December of 1875 Cuban troops of the II division 7, to the Colonel's control Cecilio González, they captured in its pier to the Spanish company of the boat "Florida", action where voluntary Francisco's Stonemason lieutenant was executed who had participated in the Cuban Colonel's murder Luis M. Arredondo. The craft was destroyed. The Highwayman-Patriot José Álvarez Arteaga (Matagás), one of their camps settled down there in 1886. The Colonel Francisco Pérez Garoz when it was in San Blas' camp September 6 1895 it ordered Matagás" that it burned the machine of vapor and jetty of Beach the German Augusto's Machine property Gupper faithful collaborator of the Spanish colonialism with 25 men, and it seems to be that that order was completed because it arrived until our days waste of the pailas or boilers for vapor of that aserrío, buried in the sand to the foot of the headland of the tip this of the beach. It was such the presence mambí in this place that he/she forced to the Spanish metropolis to build the only one strong Spanish and trail in the Marsh of Zapata (Beach The Machine - I Agree of Santa Teresa) of 4 kilometers of width.

- The German Augusto Gupper the beautiful wood that existed in the cluster exploded "Santa Teresa" up to the satiety entre1890 and 1895 and for he/she made it build a machine of vapor in the Beach - that today it takes that name for such a reason and anything that to do with the current trailes - with the one that you/they were sawed thousands of mahoganies and cedars that constituted the primary forests of the mentioned cluster. He/she also made a railroad of via narrow that beginning almost in the seat arrived until two jetties that existed in the part this of the beach, where the ships picked up the valuable load vegetable going to Europe.

- In 1900 - 1901 arrived for beach "The Machine "on board the schooner "Mail of Canasí", property of Mr. Francisco (Pancho) Marín coming from the "New Philippines" (Pinegrove of the River), the mambisa family Miranda, in order to advising the cultivation of the tobacco technically in the property "Santa Teresa". Those siblings called themselves Juan Victoliano Miranda Miranda alias "Tico Miranda", Germán Miranda, Tomás Miranda, Pious Miranda and Ramón Miranda.
For what is inferred that the first sedentary residents of Beach The Machine was Francisco Pancho Marín and The Mirandas who manufactured a House of wide housing and a cellar.

Of that legendary family it was part like descending the archiconocida Gumercinda Miranda Tamayo alias "Chicha" who The Machine was born in Beach August 20 1912. She was the smallest in the offsprings of Germán Miranda, for what attached to the father and he/she worked looking for "cork of Beehive" (hollow stick), making conucos, he/she had 300 beehives that to take care, to hang and to castrate, it packed honey and the wax, it watched over the hives, he/she fished with a chinchorro and fishhooks. Then Chicha married Spanish Pick and of that union nine children were born. From necessity the grandmother chicha he/she became a great herbolaria (knowledge of the plants for medicinal ends), also a midwife or midwife and when the Revolution triumphed in 1959, fungió for many years like Judge Bequeaths" of the whole Marsh. Chicha was very dear for all those that had the happiness of knowing it as me.

- In the end west of the beautiful beach "The Machine" it was allowed to see for a lot of time, a "sacred field" that contrasted with their environment almost always saturated of summer bullanguería. All that that sought to head to the "Tip of the Poet" or I Laugh The Mouth from the east, it owed obligadamente to observe that reduced conglomerate of crossings of wood and almost imperceptible promontories, where they rested the remains mortal founders of a genealogical root of the humedal: "The Arencibias". Caressed days after days for the waters of the Caribbean Sea, they lay there "Ningo and "The Catalan", among others.

- Among the months of August to December of 1933 the Spanish Antonio founded Maurí the Political Organization-Union older and revolutionary in the history of the Marsh of Zapata: "The Union of Forest Workers". The old Jagüey (tree) that is still conserved in the Beach The Machine, it was silent accomplice and protective insurance of many Spaniards and Cuban that forgetting the old discrepancies of the previous century, they melted hugging oneself ideal: The Organization of the Proletariat cienaguero. Many meetings and secret contacts were developed under their shade, starting from the year 1933.

- When the definitive poblamiento of Beach took place The Machine, they were neighboring of that place: "Gumercinda Miranda Tamayo, their husband (I Itch) and nine children. María Ruíz, their husband San Juan and five children that were constituted in the Dynasty of "The San Juanes" of Beach The Machine since was the last ones in abandoning that place in the decade of 1990, they were: Félix, Roberto, Antonio, Saturnine alias "Commander" who then contracted marriage with María Rafaela (Feline) Naveira Álvarez and he/she had their descendant. Although we should mean that the root of the San Juanes came from Beach The Hen with María Ruiz and the husband Manuel San Juan.
José Mere Pepe, their wife Ángela Fields and two children. Valentine Perdomo, their wife Snows Ayala with a son. Domingo Rivera (Galician), their wife Vicenta Fields and two children. Jorge Ramil and their family. Acanda and Ana. Mario Domínguez established a house-cellar that became a primary school up to 1964 after 1959.

And speaking of Nicolás Mario Domínguez González, we already had the privilege of interviewing him in Big Jagüey for the distant year 1997, and he counted us that it established a business of coal with the Lessee of the Property The Machine, Spanish Salustiano Carries it among the years 1944 at 1948, where a cellar that had the name settled down of "it Spreads Carries it". Of what you/they come off two conclusions:
Primera: the one beats of proprietors of the property The Machine, something very common as for the property of the earth in Marsh of Zapata before 1959.
Segunda: From 1900 up to 1948 in Beach The Machine had a cellar.

Several Spaniards lived in Beach The Machine and their surroundings, being the cases of:
- Luis Castrellón that to the very skillful being in the handling of a bagpipe, it livened up in the boring nights the place and also in The Soplillar.
- The siblings Emilio and Esterbino Rodríguez who for the years 1920-1930 used for cellar one of the two housings emblemáticas of Beach The Machine, built surely for the German Augusto Gupper or for their first inhabitant Pancho Marín.
- José A. López Pick.
- José Mud.
- Domingo Rivera.
- José Cavalco.

This whole passage for the poblamiento of Beach The Machine is to demonstrate that in its surroundings a small populational establishment was fomented, not in the traditional conventional way as a circular batey, but in a rectangular, lengthened way and with certain dispersion between a ranch and the other one. And they were factors of the appearance of that "rickety establishment" the following ones:
- Natural existence of a watery one in casimba form or open up of stone, where a river that produces a very strong sound as that of a snore in time of llenantes runs undergroundly. This well of fresh water is to single 50 meters to the east of Beach The Machine, now with a small curb.
- Existence in their surroundings of forest semideciduo and yanal very appreciated for the elaboration of the vegetable coal and forest products.
- Existence from 1900 of a cellar that refaccionaba to the forest workers.
- Existence of a point of coastal shipment and a very old road as the mégano.
- Existence of an enviable natural environment, where two gentle beaches (The Bedroom and The Machine) they cause ecstasy.

The grandmother "chicha" it counted us that several times he/she saw Jesus Menéndez, Lázaro Rock, Juan Cane plantations in Beach The Machine, place of forest workers' conglomeration for the factors before exposed and of foundation of the Forest Labor Union. And that Mrs. María Ruiz, mom of the San Juanes, had put to Jesus Menéndez the nickname of "The Negrito of the Shortening", because in those times, years 1930, the shortening was very scarce and face in the cellars, then the women complained about it before Menéndez and him he/she carried out several administrations and at once he/she was solved such a problem.
The grandmother's tired and vivacious eyes "Chicha" they also saw several times to Fidel Castro and to Celia Sánchez there in Beach The Machine, negotiating the incorporation from the young cenagueros to the study of occupations in schools of Havana among the years 1960 and 1961.

After the traffic of the highway opened up November of 1959, 5 Beach The Machine it was very frequented by the Cuban families that every weekend of summer and in the months of July and August fundamentally, they arrived to her in dissimilar vehicles that finished its journey under the shade protector of the robust trees of grape creek that there existed. In those first years of the Revolution neither it was spoken of Environment, protection of the dune neither of ecology, for that that the habitual practice of going up the vehicles on the sand looking for the shade, was compactando the same one and destroying the coastal vegetation little by little, but even this way, the Beach in winter had a period of recovery since swimmer's massive affluence disappeared.
Today, unfortunately, the man's presence in Beach The Machine is daily and although more knowledge exists as for one speculated "environmental culture" and not behavioral, the nature doesn't have time of recovering.

We miss that a near day he/she takes conscience of it, and let us make a lot more than what we have made up to now in benefit of one of those "Seven Natural Marvels" of the Marsh of Zapata: Beach The Machine and River The Mouth!
