The Marsh of Zapata occupies the south end of the county of Matanzas. He/she has an extension of 4520 KM2, while their longitude is from 175 Km of west to this, between Fat Tip and Jagua. The maximum width is of 58 KM from the south of Torriente until Key Miguel and the width average of 14 to 16 KM. It is adjacent for the east with the municipality of Abreus, for the northeast with the municipalities of Calimete, Watery of Passengers and Big Jagüey, while Union of Reyes makes it for the northwest, the Ensenada of the Broa for the west and Caribbean Sea to the south.
After the political division-administrative of 1976 their extension is of 4 230 KM2, and even this way, it turns out to be the most extensive municipality in Cuba and the less town with 9 163 inhabitants, for 2.1 inhabitant's populational density for KM2.
It was baptized from 1742 taking as antecedent, the application of earth grace made by Mr. Francisco Zapata in 1636 to the Town council of Havana.
The place chosen by him was named "Watery of Ranch of Juan Gentleman", located in the north riverbank of the river Hatiguanico. With the time this country property began to call himself Marsh of Zapata, since a small marsh existed in its south part, then, gradually, it was expanding
that name to the whole basin. It turned out to be more favored by the history this gentleman Zapata that the intrepid Admiral Christopher Columbus Truth!
The territory possesses the biggest area of swamps and swamps of Cuba, with 260 000 hectares. 75% of its floor is marshy and 25% is only of mainland, constituting the biggest and better conserved humedal in the insular Caribbean.
